The lowest end of the scale represents anime that have no artistic value whatsoever, and no more than a scrap of entertainment value. Ugly or uncreative production, clichéd characterisation and just general stupidity is the mantra of the one-star anime.

Only slightly painful to watch, and perhaps even pretty enjoyable despite its flaws.

A good, solid episode of anime, which, while not memorable, does its job of entertaining well. This is basically the average score, given to series I’m not disappointed with.

An episode that was not only provided entertainment, but was especially gripping or profound - out of reach of mediocrity and series that are built on clichés and stereotypes.

Doesn’t have to be perfect, but to qualify for 5 stars it has to have both kept me gripped to the screen, and also genuinely impressed me in someway, either with a remarkable production effort, or a strong sense of originality and creativity.
